Vilnius, Lithuania - my next destination

Hi guys, labas rytas! I've booked my next trip in early June, I'm off to Vilnius in Lithuania. I will be based in the capital Vilnius and taking two trips out of Vilnius - visiting the small town of Trakai as well as the second biggest city in Lithuania, Kaunas. I will be doing the AirBNB thing in central Vilnius - great prices indeed. It has been a while since I've visited a new country - given how many times I have traveled around Europe, I tend to visit the same country a few times (but visit a different part of it each time). I have never been to Lithuania before and it is going to be the 51st country that I have visited. I am now having fun learning Lithuanian - ooh boy, it is a Baltic language which is only related to Latvian and it is not easy. Apparently about 80% of Lithuanians do speak some Russian (they were a part of the Soviet Union), so that will be a last resort for me if I can't get myself understood in either Lithuanian or English. Vilnius is tantalizingly close to the Belarus border, but good grief, it is a nightmare to get a visa for Belarus - it's like they really don't want tourists to visit, so I have given up on that and am going to do Lithuania justice on this trip. I am sure it is going to be a very interesting trip indeed, I love visiting Eastern Europe. Many thanks for reading, labai aciu!

  1. Labas Alex, kaip sekasi? Lithuania will be awesome, it is actually my fave among the Baltic states. Trakai is a sight to behold. I did not end up in Kaunas 10 years back but I remembered that my most memorable side trip was to the Curonian Spit. I based myself off Klaipeda and had a really nice time with a bunch of folks from Ireland and France and the day trip on the spit was awesome. I will give the hill of crosses off Siaulai a miss though if I had to do it again.

Safe trip. It will be lovely ;)

    1. Labas! Labai aciu, I have read about the Curonian Spit but it does look rather far from Vilnius and given my limited time, I was only planning to do Vilnius, Kaunas and Trakai. If time permitted, yeah there's so much more to do but I am only there from a Thurs - Monday.

  2. Hmm that is a challenge. The Curonian Spit will require a 4-5h train journey to Klaipeda, then a wait of an hour for a 30 min ferry ride and a long bus ride down to Nida. Certainly no time. Let me know how Kaunas is. Am making a return trip to the Baltics in autumn and have a day to spare. May consider to head there if it's worth it based on your assessment. Laimingos kelionÄ—s

    1. I will certainly be vlogging when I am there. Also, I had some amazing news that I will 99.99% be heading to America this summer (all expenses paid) and am now contemplating whether to take the opportunity to explore America at length or use the fact that I am already there to go to somewhere like Puerto Rico or Dominican Republic?
