Ten Tips For Enjoying Your Roman Holiday

Ciao guys, I have just uploaded my first piece of travel writing on Rome to Alvinology. It is my list of ten useful tips to make your holiday in Rome better - some of these tips are common sense but others are things you wouldn't have thought about until you are there, like how to find a toilet when nature calls in central Rome! Do have a read of that piece and if you have any other questions about visiting Rome and/or Italy in general, please feel free to leave me a comment below. I have plenty of other funny and interesting stories from Rome to tell. Thanks for reading, grazie mille.

  1. Welcome back and take care and recover. It must really be hot in Rome this time of year. I visited in late October last time and it was still really mild and warm, it must be much hotter this time! I will say that most times, the cheaper eats tend to be very local and the nonna running the place generally speak only Italian but most folks should be able to figure out the menu description even in Italian. Oh and it is interesting you had a post describing about call of nature! Actually, most times I have realised that a simple "scusate, devo andare la toilette grazie?" will get you a very nice outcome. I generally leave a 1 euro tip in sheer gratitude though.

    1. I am battling this sore throat/congested head/cough thing - been unwell since I got back, I think the exhaustion did get to me at the end. Oooooh I don't feel so well, been coughing all morning.

    2. Ouch, it happens when there's too much excitement, insufficient rest and temperature fluctuations. Take it as advice from a trained pharmacist. Lots of water, rest, some simple painkillers like paracetamol, decongestant and gargle will help. Water is probably the most important. A wet throat helps a sore throat and clears the sinuses. Take care and get well soon.

    3. I think water is overrated when one is unwell - it has no medicinal value, it doesn't cure anything. The lack of water can cause you all kinds of problems, but certainly drinking more water than you need doesn't actually help you get well any faster: painkillers will help you deal with the symptoms of flu and the decongestants will help clear up that horrible congested head - but water per se doesn't do that much. I do like drinking honey and lemon when I am feeling ill like that.

    4. You are right that it probably won't help you get better faster but staying dehydrated also means honey and vit C and decongestants will not work optimally. And certainly a dry throat will make the sore throat feel even worse. Of course getting fluids down flavoured with honey and lemon or as chicken soup will be far more palatable. I should perhaps say that preventing dehydration is the essential tip.
