Miss "Contact Me If You Want"

Good grief. Aiyoh. Alamak. I have come across some pretty awful applicants as a gatekeeper but good grief, I invite you to meet Miss "Contact me if you want." A company I do a lot of contract work for is looking for a new member of staff - business is booming, I had been charged with the responsibility of recruiting that new member of staff and as the role does require some language work, I thought a good place to start would be this Facebook page for multilingual people in London. I actually managed to identify two extremely high calibre candidates within 12 hours (and I can call off the search now really) but I want you to meet Miss "Contact me if you want". Here's the screenshot:

Now I am now suggesting that she is not right for the job - she claims to speak 4 languages (which is great) but instead of sending me a message to start a conversation about applying for the job (which would give them a chance to pitch themselves to me and convince me why I should choose them over all the other very high quality candidates - oh no, Miss 'Contact me if you want' expects me to contact her and then what? Beg her to work for this company? Send a car for her on her first day? Has this woman actually applied for a real job before in her life before? So before you start blaming the government when young people can't get a job, ask yourself this: for young people like Miss 'Contact me if you want' - who is to be blamed when she can't get a job, when gatekeepers like me say no to her? This is why I have always stressed the importance of soft skills - Miss 'Contact me if you want' must be smart enough to learn 4 languages to a high level, but does she even know how to apply for a job? That's where soft skills comes in - it is so important and this is a key example of a woman who is sadly lacking in soft skills.

But that's just me being a bitch as always. Do let me know what you think. Does this woman deserve a chance? I don't think so but hey feel free to disagree with me and let me know what you think! Thank you very much for reading.

  1. She was probably expecting not to be accepted. Or maybe she fear rejection? I guess she had too many opportunities given to her instead of her searching for them.

Sometimes my manager do contact me and ask me if I want to work today. Then again, it's a pretty low end job as a server and I've work for him before..and I made contact with him first.

    1. Who knows why she made such a lame attempt to get my attention. I had already made it clear that "This is great! I must say, I am spoilt for choice as there are so many excellent candidates who are so multilingual - you're all so brilliant now the hard part would be to find the best candidate!!!" Clearly, competition is fierce - so when you are already warned that competition is so fierce given how many high quality candidates have applied already, why did she even bother to apply in such a lame manner?

I can't comment on your situation as I don't know enough about what you do - but certainly in my field, you need to be pretty "tua pai" (a big shot) if you think you can sit back and wait for work to come and find you; most people will have to find work by being proactive rather than have that kind of 守株待兔 (Shǒu Zhū Dài Tù) attitude.

    2. Mind you, I have managed to create a short list of credible candidates and let's just say I am stunningly impressed with the quality of these candidates. I won't be making a decision as of yet for a couple of days but given the fierce competition for good jobs these days, I sincerely hope you young people know how to apply for jobs if you spot an opportunity that you really want!
