It's so funny when my mother tells me that my cousin told her that she read my blog and that many of her friends do as well - my mother knows that I blog but she has no idea that I am actually reaching this many people. My mother actually asked me if I had invited my cousin to read my blog and I had to tell her, "no, she must have found it over the internet, probably via some other site. People do read my blog and share my articles you know?"
Given how the recent Alvinology & NS saga this week has brought a spike in traffic to my blog, I noted a comment that was left on the EDMW forum about my blog. This guy Firebrand83 said, "He move jiu move lo why he set up blog to gloat over us who can't move." He posted this at 9:50 am on the 7th October.
And at 9:53 am, just three minutes later, Lycans offers firebrand83 a reply. "u may call it gloating but i think Alex really likes Singapore...otherwise he wont devote his time to his blog that deals with many singaporean issues. Reading his blog, I think he is peeved with how Sinkies just take things lying down, as if there is no more fight in us. His blog also offers insight to living in a foreign land and has good articles dealing with xenophobia, lifestyle, etc."
And about three hours later, Klavier writes (in response to Lycans' comment), "i agree with chiu.. if he did not have his old country in mind.. he wouldnt spend more time writing about it.. both positively or negatively.." How about that eh?

Hi AL/LIFT
ReplyDeleteFinally after a month and reading this freshly post article, I couldn't help to visit your blog via my laptop. I've been reading your blog over my mobile and I admit that I will check back for updates every now and then.
Your articles inspire me and I'm happy to know that someone had done it before me in a different way. It seems like I'm developing a crush on you (your articles).
Every time after reading your articles, I will make a mental note to tell you how much I like to engage in a conversation with you (over Starbucks/wine/chinese tea).
In any case, I'm glad that I stumbled to your blog while I was looking to buy some winter gloves. That is how I read your article on how to survive winter.
Keep on writing!
XOXO,
Berry
Thanks for your kind words Berry.
DeleteDon't forget to get yourself a good hat to protect your head, it is amazing how many people neglect to keep their heads warm in the winter. Our hair does very little to protect our heads from the cold.
merci.
DeleteHello Alex, I've been meaning to send you a picture of Churchill smoking a cigar (couldn't upload a picture) with this quote: "You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood for something sometime in your life."
ReplyDeleteI'm not insinuating you have enemies, but I know how it feels to be a non-conformist. I can't tell you how much we have in common in terms of my educational background and family background (including being Hakka and having tiger parents). I grew up in SG, hated it, was a complete "banana" in a SAP school, rebelled against the system and was some sort of social outcast. I finally went to college in the UK and also happened to speak a couple of languages including French and German (but I definitely cannot top your list of languages.:)). I landed in NYC all by myself after graduating from UK a couple of years ago and against all odds, became a naturalized US citizen. Your blog so captures the essence of what I had wanted to say for a long long time and I really want to thank you for it.
Congratulations on your 5 million views.
Thank you very much Nicky - and yes I have heard that quote before, it seems rather apt :) Enemies are perhaps a strong word - I think one might use the word 'haters' - ie. people who hate what you stand for rather than have something really personal against you.
DeleteIt's like I read a story on Facebook about Justin Bieber's latest episode of stupidity, someone attacked him on Twitter than millions of JB fans defended him unthinkingly, without considering what that dumb kid has just done (like the total twat he is) - now I would describe my feelings towards JB fans as that of a 'hater' - I hate their kind of behaviour, their lack of logic and the way they support JB without questioning the merits of the case. But do I have anything personal against individual JB fans? No, I don't. I don't even know them.
Yes, haters are always going to hate no matter what you do. My wise mom always say that "人言可畏“,and this cannot be more true. When the Alvin saga exploded, my friend (who is proudly serving in the army), posted the BBC article about you and people started just making things up. As I jumped to your defense, I furnished a plethora of reasons why I left SG too(some of them similar to yours and some based on Human rights reasons). I was really hoping for somebody to come up with an intelligible, valid response but none could, which is really sad in my opinion. Like you, when I went to the ICA to renounce my citizenship, the ICA officer couldn't furnish a single good reason why I should stay and the interview session became a govt-bashing session.
DeleteTruth is, any so-called FT (or at least 50%) in Singapore would leave right away if they had a shot at the US or the UK. This is a question that SGreans and the govt should really ask themselves. Compared to the UK or the US, the level of assimilation required of an FT (or immigrant) is really low. It's a simple principle really (and we all know it in dating), if you play hard to get, and if people actually had to give up things to get it (UK/US/Australian PR or citizenship), people are bound to cherish it. If you are easy and behave like a "__ " for money (like the SG govt), you will never get any respect or loyalty.
Oh don't get me started on the crap people have been making up about me online, check out my latest post tonight in response to all these slander http://limpehft.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/a-red-herring-my-sex-life.html I am rising above it all by using humour to make fun of the idiots who are talking crap about me.
DeleteThanks for your support Nicky.
Always a pleasure, Alex. I must say I really admire your patience with these guys. I wanted to leave you with another quote from Eleanor Roosevelt (another great orator), "Great Minds discuss Ideas; Average Minds discuss Events; Small Minds discuss People." 99% of SGreans would definitely fall in the latter category. Glad you are here to enlighten us all!
