I have just completed a first draft of my reaction to the moral panic about 17 year old prostitute in Singapore. My first reaction was this: Geylang has been there all these years, no, make that all these decades. You know prostitutes exist in Singapore yet you all chose to look the other way, ignoring the plight of these women who get exploited by the sex industry. Now there's this case and suddenly everyone wants to jump the bandwagon and condemn these 44 men - it stinks of hypocrisy.
Then I thought... is it only hypocrisy or does it go way beyond that? And of course, it goes a lot further, a lot deeper and I shall reveal to you why this case has sent Singaporeans into such a moral panic. I will need a bit of time to refine the article but it'll be worth the wait: akan datang!!
PS. Who thinks they know what I think is the deeper reason why Singaporeans have gone into this moral panic? Ki chiu, ki chiu, leave a comment, don't be shy!
