Hi everyone.
I am finally back from Belgium and I have so much to catch up with, I will tell you more about my time in Belgium soon but I thought I'd share a few photos of my favourite cafe in the whole wide world - this is in Maastricht, just over the border in the Netherlands from Belgium. I took several trips around the region on my days off - I will blog more on that soon, there's so much to do and catch up with now I am back home.
Maastricht is a lovely city and I will post more photos of Maastricht soon. I visited the
Selexyz Dominicanen bookstore there which is set in an old church and we're not just talking about any old church, they don't make churches like that anymore! This church is a Dominican church which is over 700 years old and I could've sat there all day, with my cup of coffee just staring at the ceiling. It is free to visit the book store and for the price of a cup of coffee (about 2 euros) you can sit there and just soak up the atmosphere. I'll let the photos speak for themselves.

What an amazing setting for a cafe. |

This was what I saw as I looked up from my table in the cafe. |

Oh and you can buy books too there. |
very nice! but it's sad in a way, an old church should be a place for prayers, and not be taken over by commerce. our chijmes is worse.
ReplyDeleteI've seen old churches being converted into various things - there's one in North London which is carved out into individual flats which doesn't really do it justice as you don't get a sense of the scale of the big building. There's one in central London which has been converted into an Aussie Pub called 'the Walkabout' and at least this one has made some effort to preserve the character of the church as a bookstore. Chijmes is a good comparison, but this one is older (Chijmes is like what, about 150 years old?) - this is over 700 years old and far bigger.
