How to waste billions of dollars, by President Trump |
Let's say for the purpose of the argument, that Trump does get his long border wall built (eventually). The US government somehow finds the money to build it and it is there for the full length of the Mexican-American border: whilst some Trump supporters may see that as a great symbol of American pride, would this wall actually stop illegal migrants from Mexico and other countries crossing over that border? The answer is no, here are some reasons why.
1. Wall or no wall, you can't shut the border: ever heard of forged documents?
Currently, there are approximately 350 million people crossing that border annually - this is the world's busiest border. We're talking about those with passports and the right visas crossing that border. Plenty of trade flows between the two countries, loads of tourists from both countries cross that border and the prosperity of many American border towns like El Paso and San Diego do rely on their strategic position being right on the border with Mexico. With a wall in place, what that means is that instead of trying to walk across the desert into the US, illegal migrants will simply resort to purchasing fake documents on the black market to turn up at the border crossing and get themselves into the US. Any document can be forged these days and the fact is, many Mexicans do possess the right to live, study and work in the US legally. Are the US border guards going to be able to tell a real student visa from a high quality forgery? No, especially if the wall fuels an explosion in black market forgers who will be able to forge any visa or travel document you need to get you across that border (at the right price). Having traveled from Tijuana in Mexico to San Diego in California before, I can tell you that the queues to get into America is notoriously long (you can queue for hours) and border guards are under huge pressure to try to get people through as quickly as possible whilst still checking passports and documents. Sounds like a perfect opportunity for someone to slip in with a forged document.
The US border control authorities do not have an axe to grind with Mexicans who do have a valid visa to enter the US - trying to sort out the genuine visas from the fake ones is going to be more and more difficult. Furthermore, there is a black market out there for stolen passports: I was warned when traveling in north Africa to be extra careful as people would want to steal my passport. I look Chinese and hold a British passport, if say I was robbed of my passport, I would simply go to the British embassy to obtain emergency documents to travel home, whereupon I would apply for a new one. The one stolen from me would then be used over and over again by people smugglers trying to sneak illegal Chinese immigrants into Europe - the passport is genuine, it just wouldn't belong to the person traveling on it. How many of you don't quite look like your passport photo? Likewise, many tourists have their passports stolen from them whilst in Mexico - the thieves know a good passport can be used for several years to get many migrants into America.

There are plenty of forged and stolen passports out there. |
2. They will just fly into America instead.
There are plenty of airlines operating routes between the two countries, including an increasing number of budget airlines. With a wall in place, illegal migrants will simply board a plane with fake documents that they can obtain on the black market and easily fly into the US. Now the reason why this route hasn't been exploited as much is because the airlines can turn people away at the airport and not allow them to board the plane. If an illegal immigrant is refused entry into the US, then it is the responsibility of the airline to remove the person from US soil and return that person back to the point of origin (according to the Warsaw Covnention). Thus many people have the impression that most illegal migrants are deterred from this route because of the fear of eagle-eyed check in staff at airports who will scrutinize every details. Let me share with you what I did last year which made me realize this was not really the case.
Last year, I flew from Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic to Fort Lauderdale in Florida with Spirit Airlines - one of the many budget airlines popular in the US today. Not only did I check in online, I printed my own boarding pass and since I was only traveling with hand luggage, I didn't need to speak to anyone at the airport. It was only just as I was about to board the plane at the gate when a member of staff asked me, "sir, do you have your ESTA?" I didn't think they were going to check it till I got to America, so I rummaged through my hand luggage in a hurry and whipped out a piece of paper which I thought was my ESTA. Without so much as reading it, the bored airport employee seemed to have taken a cursory glance at it and waved me onto the plane. It was only when I got to my seat and was putting my things away that I realized that I had just shown her my AirBNB booking for Miami, Florida instead of my ESTA form.
3. There is a long border with Canada as well.
The Canadian-US border is 8,891 km long, that makes it 2.77 times longer than the Mexican-US border. There are hardly any fences, never mind walls to mark where the border is and often, this border is in heavily forested regions, far away from the nearest town. An illegal immigrant could fly into a Canadian border town as a tourist, then literally walk over from Canada into the US in one of the more remote parts of the border because this border is so long and is hardly patrolled apart from at major crossing points. Americans simply don't worry about Canadians 'sneaking' into the US as Canada is by far a better country (let's face it: Trudeau vs Trump - I can indeed make a statement like that). And besides, relatively few illegal migrants actually try to use this route because of Canada's isolation, with only land borders with the US and Greenland some distance across the icy Baffin bay. And most that border is barely patrolled.
![]() |
You can just stroll from Canada into the US in most places. |
Another reason why this is not done often is the cost - it goes way beyond the cost of a one way flight from say Mexico City to Toronto. In order to procure a tourist visa to Canada, the Mexican will have to book a return ticket, have a hotel reservation, maybe some tours booked whilst in Canada and on top of that, they often have to show bank statements, pay slips from an employer etc to demonstrate that they have a life in Mexico that they wish to return to. The latter (bank statements, pay slips etc) can easily be forged (but you've gotta pay those forgers a lot of money) and the full price of a Canadian holiday is something really only middle and upper class Mexicans can afford - those who want to enter the US as illegal migrants simply cannot find that kind of money and that's why the resort to trying to cross the land border with Mexico. This is a much safer but far more expensive route. Those who are desperate however, will beg, borrow and steal the money to use this route if the wall means there isn't a cheaper alternative anymore.
4. Tunnels already exist under the current border
Did you know that currently, there are tunnels used by smugglers under the current border? Have a read of this Wikipedia page on smugglers' tunnels: they have existed all over the world and some of them are pretty outrageous, like the one between Ukraine and Slovakia. This 700 meter tunnel came complete with a narrow gauge railway and was used to smuggle cigarettes into the European Union. Since 1990, over 200 tunnels between the US and Mexico have been found by the authorities - but how many actually exist? No one knows. So far, these tunnels are mostly used to smuggle drugs into the US because these tunnels are expensive to dig and so are reserved for discretely smuggling drugs: the emergence of a group of illegal migrants from the other end of the tunnel in America usually gives away the location of the tunnel. Some of these tunnels are very low-tech whilst others are stunningly well built. But imagine if a wall is built, there will then be a demand for a deeper, safer tunnel designed for smuggling illegal immigrants and with far fewer ways to cross the border you can be sure many more people will build these tunnels.
5. Anyone can be bribed. People are corrupt.
I refer you back to the incident at Santo Domingo airport where I showed the airport employee the wrong piece of paper and was still waved onto the plane. In my opinion, that was just a case of shocking incompetence. She looked incredibly bored and half asleep and okay, let's be honest: haven't we all made mistakes at work when we're bored and sleepy? But it does illustrate an important point: you can design the most elaborate and complicated visa system to verify the authenticity of travelers (such as the US ESTA system) but it is still down to individuals on the ground, working in places like airports and border crossings to enforce them. By that token, it is possible to bribe people within the system to look the other way when an individual (or a group of migrants) attempt to make a crossing with forged documents - after all, even if the mistake is realized later, the bribed officer and simply say, "I made an honest mistake, I'm at the end of a long shift and I'm not feeling well, that's why I didn't notice the details." Humans are greedy and people who work in airports and border crossings are not paid a lot - put the two together and corruption will flourish.
![]() |
Can you bribe someone to make a mistake when checking documents? |
5. Political rhetoric and symbolism vs plausible solutions.
The beauty of a wall is that it will appeal to very dumb Americans who are racist and xenophobic, it will however, not appeal to those who realize that illegal immigration is a problem that has to be dealt with in a more practical way. People will find their ways around the wall one way or another. A far more sensible solution would be for the US to improve ties with Mexico - rather than building a wall to stop the immigration, the US should pour far more investments into Mexico and improve conditions there, create more jobs there so Mexicans will no longer be compelled to move to the US as illegal immigrants to escape poverty. Currently, the US gives a relatively modest amount of aid to Mexico and that is mostly earmarked for the environment, human rights or democracy - if the US can work with Mexico and transform Mexico into a much more prosperous country for the next 20 - 30 years, then that would create a long term solution to the problem. Think of how much development you can do in Mexico if you invested US$8 billion directly into Mexico - educating the youths, creating jobs and opportunities, making sure the next generation of Mexicans want to build their futures in Mexico instead of believing that their own route to a bright future lies north of the border.
But no Trump's rhetoric has been one of isolation: make America great again, put America first. If you're not American, you're the enemy, you're the outsider, you're not one of us. So with that kind of government in place, Trump isn't interested in helping Mexico or building relationships with his neighbour, he's far more interested in appealing to a section of his supporters who are far more keen to see a wall built rather than find any long term solution to the problem. However, if Trump were to break this promise on building a wall, well that would be seen as a sign of weakness or he would have to admit that he was wrong about the wall in the first place. Many have thought that it was one of those crazy things he's promised because he didn't actually think he'd get into the White House and would then have to deliver on those outrageous promises. And sady, no one in his inner circle has the guts to tell him he's wrong.
![]() |
Do you wanna work with Mexico or just piss them off? |
But wait, uno momento por favor: no hay el dinero para el muro!
This wall is highly unlikely to be built in the near future without secure funding for it. Yes there have been crazy dictators commission some pretty outrageous monuments and vanity projects in the past, such as the incomplete 105-storey high Ryugyong hotel in Pyongyang, North Korea or the massive Casa Poporului built by Ceausecu in Bucharest, Romania and the giant, rotating, gold statue of Supramurat Niyazov, former ruler of Turkmenistan in the capital Ashgabat. If only Trump would have been satisfied with building a gold statue of himself in Manhattan, anything would be cheaper than trying to build this fucking wall. Now Trump has announced that he was going to use an import tax on Mexican goods to pay for this wall - but then again, that's not the same as making Mexico pay for the wall. Instead, he's punishing Americans who are choosing to buy Mexican imports and they are the ones who are paying for the wall.
This is just so wrong on so many levels: firstly, Trump claimed that Mexico was going to pay for the wall. Well, they have said no, so now instead he's going to make Americans who are buying Mexican imports to pay for the wall. A flat 20% tax may raise a lot of money very quickly, but that is still money coming from consumers in America rather than Mexico. The fact is, short of threatening to invade Mexico or send a nuclear missile south of the border and blow up one of Mexico's bigger cities, America really has very limited options when it comes to holding Mexico to ransom when it comes to procuring any money out of them for this wall. It has been pointed out that 81% of Mexico's exports goes to the US, so it could be Trump trying to flex his muscles and telling Mexico, "I could bring you to your knees, you need us, now play ball bitch!" However, the trade relationship between the US and Mexico is far more complex than that.
![]() |
"Mexico will not pay for that fucking wall" |
The American car industry relies on the cheaper labour costs in Mexico to assemble their cars but the complex components are manufactured in the US. So some parts of the car are made in America, transported to Mexico and assembled there before being imported back into the US for American consumers. That works well for the car industry and keeps prices low for American consumers who love their cars. However, in trying to disrupt this process. Donald Trump is going to slap a 20% import tax on goods that flow north from Mexico. That would make many American cars 20% more expensive because they were assembled in Mexico. Trump's long term plans would be to try to get these car-assembly line jobs back to the US, but would workers in Chicago or Detroit be willing to work for as little as those in a Mexican factory? Of course not. American cars made in America are going to cost a lot more than those actually made south of the border - either way, the American consumer loses out when the price of their next car rises by at least 20%. If you're one of those lower-income Americans struggling to make ends meet, well, a price hike of >20% is going to hurt pretty bad. Talk is cheap, are you willing to pay +20% more for your goods in the name of patriotism?
The irony is that Trump is going to go after the very people who are not responsible for the problem of illegal immigration from Mexico: he will go after Mexicans who are studying, working and living in the US legally (as well as Mexican tourists who visit the US legally) and impose all kinds of taxes on them to try to regain the cost of the wall. Whilst those who are in the US illegally will be able to dodge such taxes. Go figure. It doesn't make sense, it is counterproductive - a sensible American president would say to Mexicans: we welcome you if you come to our country legally, please follow the rules and obey the laws, let's respect each other. But what will happen, is that those who follow the rules are punished and he is indirectly encouraging them to break the rules and find other ways to come to the US. Trump is merely going after the lowest hanging-fruit rather than addressing the root of the problem - it shows that he has no idea what he is doing as this is merely going to breed a lot more resentment, making things a lot worse.
![]() |
Trump is heading down the wrong way on this issue. |
Likewise, so much trade flows between the two countries: this is all completely legal of course and people on both sides of the border benefit from this trade. But because this is legal, Trump goes after it and slaps a huge tax on it to raise money for his wall because it is a low-hanging fruit, an easy target for him. He is punishing the wrong people: those who are making goods legally in Mexico and creating jobs in Mexico. By disrupting their livelihood, he will drive those obeying the law out of business whilst encouraging others to break the law by smuggling their goods into the US to dodge these taxes. There is a sinister twist of course to it: if you're going to smuggle something across the border, you won't bother smuggling low value items like fruits and vegetables, no you'll be smuggling mostly drugs. Trump's wall could lead to a lot more Mexican drugs flowing into America. The wall will do little to stop the smuggling.
Finally, yes I recognized that undocumented illegals are a major problem in America, as it is in so many other rich countries around the world as well. However, the solution is not to build the most expensive wall in the world that will not solve the problem: no the problem is punishing those who are using illegal migrants as workers. There needs to be extremely stiff penalties, even jail time, for those caught knowingly employing illegal migrant workers. Once you make it very hard for illegal immigrants to obtain any kind of paid employment, they will no longer feel that America is the land of opportunity for them if they have simply no means of making ends meet in America. It may sound cruel but what alternative is there? But by the same token, you do need to keep the door open for skilled migrants to come to America so you encourage people to follow the rules because the whole situation will be far easier to manage if more people simply obeyed the law, knowing the outcome will be much better for them that way. Is there a better alternative?

Migrants make America stronger, not weaker. |
This is such a complicated issue - I could go on, but there is a series of articles on the BBC about this which are very well written and if you still can't get enough of this fucking wall shambles, then I suggest you have a read there. Oh and it's a hashtag now, #fuckingwall as first coined by former Mexican president Vicente Fox. "Mexico is not going to pay for that fucking wall. #Fuckingwall" So you get the idea, Trump's going to tax the American public to fund the building of the wall whilst not really having a game plan to make Mexico pay for it, whilst not realizing that most of the illegal immigrants from Mexico entered the US through completely legal means and then simply overstayed their visas, not by illicit border-crossing that Trump's wall could stop. I'd stop here. Many thanks for reading. Muchas gracias.
The wall seems like just a symbol. It is to be the metaphor of Trump's supposed protectionist regime. But I think of bigger significance is his clamping down on entry from Muslim majority countries. We will need to see how well that one goes.
ReplyDeleteFrom your earlier piece, I have this two cents to say about the Trump Presidency. That I think your scenario 1 remains the most likely for Americans. From looking at Brexit to the policies proposed by Trump (deregulation, imposing tariffs, etc), I am still convinced that far right politics and the so called "politically incorrect stance" will not do the job of addressing income gaps and wealth distribution.
I think it is really stupid that people are lauding Trump for the rise in the stock market. The Dow broke 20000 last week but I think we all know it benefits guys like Warren Buffett and Trump's fellow fat cats rather than the guy on the street. That's why it is so stupid when someone goes "I love so and so because he is politically incorrect". I mean, so what?
Its not about the politics whichever side endorses, its really about the policies. Having good, well paying jobs, not just saving jobs for their own sake but they turn out to be all lowly paid, menial ones. Universal healthcare and social welfare. And for all his brash tone, is Trump going to make sure that wealth trickles down to those who need it? He seems to be busy pleasing all the conservative factions that helped propel him to power. Like one of his first few executive orders was on abortion law. I mean, how will that improve American lives and bring jobs back?
I think as time goes by we will see the end of the rah rah politics and commentary, when people end up realizing that it is good policies, not politics, that will change your life.
Well Raymond, as far as a symbol goes, it's one helluva expensive symbol. Why, even a giant gold statue of himself in Times Square would be far cheaper. Right now, everyone is saying, it's only been a few days, give him a chance to prove himself. I'm waiting to see when their patience will run out.
DeleteWhile we are on the US, just wanted to revisit a piece of news on Amos Yee's asylum application. Apparently he's gone on a long rant on the application system because he will only be granted a court date very late and this means that he would have spent longer in detention in the US than he ever did in Singapore. Irony huh? And he's posted a long rant on this and asking his supporters to push for his release, though I'm not sure what they can even do.
DeleteAnd I highlight this because I think this is a perfect example of someone who didn't do his research and doesn't know what he was in for, and who believes in the rah rah, chest beating, social media rant as the way to solve his problems. Failing which, ask for donations and crowdfunding, lol. Which further serves to support my earlier point that simply being "politically incorrect" does jack all in solving real world problems.
And I think many Trump supporters are like that in their failure to understand real world scenarios. This is how they can come to believe Trump as the supposed "out of the box" person who will help them. They fail to even realize that Trump can talk whatever he wants but he is in fact the embodiment of the system and rich poor divide that they so hate. Because they know so little of the system that they think anyone who spouts a bit of big talk will be the one who can circumvent it.
The talk after the election is that Bernie Sanders was the one whom the Americans truly wanted. I think that's true. I think he would have the policy plans to really address issues that Americans are concerned about. Trump will not be the one to do so fully.
Even if Bernie Sanders was elected, i think
Deletethe underlying problem of America (& many countries) would still be unsolved. What problem?
"Know so little of the system" problem
Schools rarely teach how people REALLY work and how the economy REALLY works. Do parents bother teaching their kids about how the world works at least within their capacity? Insisting on kids learning ABCs and saying please and thank you and getting them to believe in the same God or gods has its value, but ultimately the child should also learn crucial knowledge about things that allow her to survive and thrive. How does Money work? How does POWER work? What is Marketing? Policies can address issues but i dun think any leader can tell people to get off the couch, and start asking questions logically.
Nah Chen, I think the problem is that in any country, you have a range of people from the very intelligent to the complete retards, such is the natural order of things. A bell curve would explain the normal distribution of intelligence, but the problem of democracy is that every individual is assigned a vote regardless of how clever/stupid/educated they are and that is how Trump got elected. Hence there is something to be said about the benevolent dictator LKY who ruled Singapore with an iron fist and made all the right decisions on behalf of all Singaporeans including those who are stupid. It worked with LKY, but it was because he was a great man, you can't replicate that formula with a weak leader. But by the same token, you can't cure stupidity. A section of the population will always be stupid - what can you do about that?
DeleteWell, Alex, my darker bits would propose a
DeleteFinal Solution.. but since i'm borderline at risk of
being on the Cull list myself, i happily accept this sloppy messy thing we call democracy
Life is a Darwinian competition after all, and stupid people will gather in groups and use coercion (violence, unjust laws) to gain the advantage over those perceived as being skilled beyond them. Trump has positioned himself as the Dark Messiah for the ham handed. A Singaporean cargo ship captain illustrated for me the gulf in ability between the Singaporean port worker vs some of the American:
"You think the American is smart? 12 + 13 containers, he need calculator to count. Then after that keep asking 'Got beer?'"
Oh and I thought my example was bad, yours wins. I was at a supermarket when there was a product at £1.65. These two women wanted to buy two, so woman A asked woman B, how much is it for 2 then? Woman B said, "I dunno, about like £3?" They couldn't work out in their heads £1.65 x 2.
DeleteHahaha! Must be supporters of Boris 'looks like Trump' Johnson! 😂
DeleteWell L Chen, whilst we're on the topic of basic maths, let me get this off my chest with you. Because it was Chinese New Year, my sister wanted to Skype me and I said fine, I'd love to catch up with you. Normally it's just me and her and my mother joined us in the conversation and my sister started asking me about my work and I couldn't resist asking my mother if she knew what I did for a living. She looked like a rabbit in the headlights and said, "something to do with investments, money, right?" OK at least she is vaguely in the right neck of the woods and I asked her point blank, "you realize what I do is very difficult, right?" And she said (get ready for this) that it was because she remembered that when she was in London, I had to call a client in Australia late at night because of the time difference and it wasn't easy to calculate the time zones. And I was like, whaaat? Figuring out what time it is in Sydney is the easy part, even if I am not sure, I just google 'time Sydney'. (They are GMT+11) That part is not rocket science, it is after I get past the "good morning James, how are you?" That's when we start talking business and that's when it gets hard because James is my Australian convertible bonds specialist. Working out what time it is for James in Sydney is the easy part, trying to work out how best I can work with James is the hard part. But no, my mother is already impressed that I can figure out what time it is in Sydney and I'm like ... that's like going to Palace of Versailles and being impressed with the door knobs instead of actually looking at the palace. And my mother even said something like, "if it was me, I'd count wrongly and call him up in the middle of the night and wake him up." And she laughed at her own joke. And I'm like, woman, how stupid are you? Time zones are a matter of addition and subtraction, not rocket science.
DeleteAnyway, I ranted about this to my other sister and she was like, "duh, newsflash, your mother is a moron, as if you didn't know that before today? She has been a total moron all her life, she is doing exactly what I'd expect her to do by saying something like that. Why do you waste so much time and energy getting upset when she says something moronic when I have come to expect nothing less from her everyday? I have to put up with her moronic ways on a daily basis, I don't have the energy to react the way you do when she says something like a moron about time zones. Get over yourself already."
Over to you Mr Chen.
Jesus bloody Christ.. That takes the cake!
Deletei do have many anecdotes to share, but nothing that is simultaneously so infuriating, ridiculous and hilarious!
😆👏
Mmm.. since we are talking about stupid people..
Deletei have a let's call it a fan's request
Could u write an article about your experience selling? On your growth as a wheeler dealer?
What are the kinds of stupid mistakes u have observed other sales people make? What stupid would be clients have u tried selling to?
I think would be most instructive and amusing at the same time
Now the angle by Trump supporters is that he is doing what he said he will do. Well, its great but, its not about doing what you said you will do. Its whether or not what you do works.
DeleteIf Trump were a true pragmatist, I think he could be a great success. Problem is I think he's either falling into the trap or being an ideologue, or that people surrounding him are themselves ideologues.
You mentioned LKY, and one of his biggest strength was he was never really an ideologue in every area. He had his key beliefs which he stuck to till death, but his governing style usually mixed things up, picking what was good from both left and right wing ideologies.
And we have seen how the liberal left has failed with regards to recent events. In fact, part of me rejoices in the fact because it is honestly pretty tiring to hear some of these liberals and their morally superior preachings, going on and on as though everyone needs to align with them. Some of their behaviour since Trump's election goes to show how similarly condescending and double standards they can be.
But then again, whatever ideology or way that Trump is appearing to align himself with still appears doubtful in terms of offering real world solutions. So Trumpists can stop boasting about how many executive orders he is signing. It means nothing until real results are obtained.
Well L Chen, the phenomena of people who can't do maths is pretty real. The sad thing is that my mum used to teach primary school maths up to PSLE - go figure, that's a woman who can't figure out time zones. "If it is 9 am in Sydney (GMT +11), what time is it in London (GMT?)" My mother can't work out stuff like that and she thinks people who can are very intelligent. It's like this Filipino clip that has gone viral https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8df6Wztv_dk
DeleteIt's like sometimes when I Skype my family, say it is 1 pm in London and 9 pm in Singapore and she'll be like oh it's daylight for you? And I'm like, yeah it's lunchtime here. And she would be like, "lunchtime yesterday, today or tomorrow?" OMFG. But yeah, I have my OMFG moments because I barely talk to her and when she does shit like that, I fall off my chair. Imagine my poor sisters who have to deal with this kinda shit from BOTH my parents every single day. They are so used to it they don't even bat an eyelid. As for selling, yeah I've written about it already: http://limpehft.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/q-lets-talk-about-sales.html
@Raymond: My American friends are all looking into moving to Canada, they are in such despair at the moment. Stay and fight the system or run away to Canada.
Alex, i wonder what came first, arrogance or stupidity? im now convinced that some stupid people are in truth arrogant people who insist that they are right all the time. Obviously if u are already right, whats the point of thinking anymore? After a few decades of arrogant
Deletenon-thinking... well there are numerous consequences... Can't count... can't take a bus...
can't communicate.. Can vote for idiotic but arrogant politicians...
China build the great wall to keep out invaders, it didnt work out so well for them
ReplyDeleteIt worked at the time, when the enemies had limited technology. The wall won't work in terms of keeping drugs out (smugglers will use drones to fly them over the wall) and illegal immigrants out (they'll just use fake/forged/stolen documents to enter the US anyway). Quite
DeleteQuite simply, in 2017, you need something far more sophisticated than a huge wall to keep drugs and illegal immigrants out. Trump is showing his age. He is thinking of the Berlin Wall which worked at the time, but only for so long.
DeleteThe Great Wall of China dun work. Poor condition of the soldiers guarding it make it easy to bribe them and also, the barbarian just invade through the weakest point of the wall.
DeleteThe wall work for a while, but in the long run, it failed.
DeleteThe Chinese did what they could with available technology at that time, don't forget their enemies also had limited technology too. Context is everything.
DeleteAgree on your point, just wish to point out that the Great Wall does not work for China. Just happened I read quite a bit on chinese Great Wall.
DeleteHistorian argued that should ancient Chinese treat the barbarous on equal ground, and trade fairly with them, there would be much less war with them. Control of free trade hurt everyone, even in today context.
Deletehold on a minute did you mention that a drug smuggler tunnel can be anywhere including Singapore?
ReplyDeleteTechnically speaking it is possible, but it will be expensive. The question is why would you want to do that when thee are far easier ways to get drugs across the straits of Johor. If I wanted to do that, I'd use a powerful drone to fly it across from Tanjong Puteri in Johor to the remove western tip of Pulau Ubin.
DeleteLikewise, by the same token, drones have been used to deliver/smuggle drugs across the borders for a long time, so even if Trump builds a wall, drug smugglers will just use their drones to fly the drugs over. It's easier and far cheaper than building a tunnel.
As it is drugs are freely available
Deletein certain circles in Singapore
Even in a small tidy place like Singapore total enforcement is impossible, let alone the mexican border
The wall is a billion dollar pie in the sky
Ooops. typo in the previous statement "to the REMOTE western tip of Pulau Ubin." Just try not to land your drugs in the middle of the Outward Bound School there, which is the only settlement in that part of Pulau Ubin. Drones have revolutionized the whole smuggling game.
DeleteBut the drone will be easily targeted and the police will shoot it down
DeleteRubbish Neon, you're an stupid idiot. Think before post something stupid like that.
DeleteEven between Singapore and Malaysia, there is a pretty long border than stretches from Tuas in the West to Tekong in the extreme East. Then you have all the boats anchored just beyond Singaporean waters in the straits of Singapore, between the Indonesian islands of Batam/Bintan and Singapore. The Singapore police is not watching every single part of this border 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - they may patrol to make sure that a human being cannot swim across or a boat that illegal crosses the border will be spotted. But humans and boats are slow and big compared to a drone, which is small and fast - these cannot be picked up by conventional radar and by the time it is spotted by the naked eye, it is too late. The best drones out there can easily fly at 100 km/hr, even 120 km/hr - which means that at top flying speed, these things can cross the straits of Johor in about 30 seconds flat. You can fly these things at night and it won't be noticed - the police simply cannot dedicate enough manpower and resources to watch the entire length of the Singapore-Malaysia border in case someone wants to fly a drone over and even if they do, they have 30 seconds to react and by the time they grab their guns (you've yet to serve NS and haven't fired a rifle before), it's too late! It's gone!
Plus one could easily fly it onto a boat in Singapore's territorial waters and it will be in and out within seconds before the marine patrols can even notice it, never mind react.
Wait, I bet you are so fucking stupid you don't even know what a drone is.
Galaxy/Neon, fuck off. I am sick and tired of explaining simple shit like "what is a drone" to fucking retarded ITE dumbshits like you.

DeleteI'm still laughing at the way you thought the police are capable of getting a weapon ready and shooting a very fast moving, small object at over 100 km/hr, possibly at night, at distances of a few hundred meters away. Even the best snipers in the world will find that kind of shot difficult. You seriously have too much faith in the police in Singapore, they are a lot more sensible then trying to place snipers all over the border with Malaysia just to hope to shoot down a drone. I seriously hope my family's tax dollars are better spent than that - given how impossible it is to even spot, never mind shoot down a fast moving drone, the police will just have to accept okay, such is technology, we have to live with it. People will use technology to smuggle drugs, it is 2017.
DeleteGalaxy/Neon, you're so fucking stupid it is unreal. Maybe NS will teach you a thing or two cos ITE has done you no good whatsoever. You're still a total retard.
"Hes the Drone!"
DeleteSorry just couldn't pass up the chance
to be a bully!
Jokes aside, i was wondering if
Chinese Investment might help fund the building of infrastructure. Ironic but where else will america find the money?
Really Looks like the yanks elected a mindless Drone too
I don't think any country would want to get involved with financing that wall. It's one sure way to make an enemy of Mexico. I think China would be wise to sit back and say, "let's wait and see how Trump fucks this one up..."
Deleteoh ok thanks for your information. So.. is there anyway to stop or catch a drone?
DeleteNo, it is very hard to stop or catch a drone if the drug smugglers use one of those very powerful models which are both small and very fast. It's the element of surprise as well, how do you know where that drone is going to appear and when? When something that small zips across the night sky that fast at over 100 km/hr - it is gone before you have the chance to even react.
DeleteTechnically it's possible to jam the frequency that the drone is using to stop it I think they were suggesting to mount them at airports to prevent anyone flying a drone into a plane.
DeleteBut then what's stopping someone from modifying a drone to use a different frequency or setting the drone to fly a preset route? That's a question there's for more technical inclined people to figure out I guess
Hi Bay, yes such jamming technology should be used around airports for aircraft safety (to avoid idiots flying drones into planes) but on the topic of stopping smugglers from flying a drove across a border to smuggle drugs, you can't possibly use this kind of technology for the full length of the border, especially if you're talking about a long border like the US-Mexican border.
DeleteAlex, does the president have powers to unilaterally secure BILLIONS of dollars of funding for a wall, or do you think his plans would be halted halfway?
ReplyDeleteI think his Wall plans are stupid to many republicans, so I am hoping Congress would be able to stop it somehow. seems like a giant waste of money even though I agree with keeping out illegals.
What is more worrying to me is his gag order on environmental issues and halting funding in foreign aid for clinics who so much as mention abortion- this could lead to many deaths for women just because he feels that life starts at conception...when in reality it is much more complicated, shit happens.
He has the backing of congress and the senate which the Republicans both control - Hilary suffered such a crushing defeat that the election that the Democrats really handed absolute power over to Trump. So what you're talking about is people within the Republican party stopping Trump, which I doubt is going to happen.
DeleteMost of us are hoping for Trump to get so obsessed over little details of minute things like the abortion laws in one state that he doesn't start WW3.
by the way do you know someone name Roy Ngerng. Is This the reason why you move out of Singapore? (just asking)
ReplyDeleteRoy Ngerng? I know how he is, but I've never met him and no he's not like my friend. I have blogged about him before and I have been very critical of his mistakes. http://limpehft.blogspot.co.uk/2014/05/homeland-or-hotel-limpehs-reflect-on.html
Deletehttp://limpehft.blogspot.co.uk/2014/05/quashing-rumours-about-roy-ngerng.html
http://limpehft.blogspot.co.uk/2014/06/the-cpf-situation-something-has-got-to.html
Ngerng got involved in Singaporean politics and made a huge mess of a situation - in contrast, I finished my A levels, did my NS quietly, then went abroad for my studies and never returned. I never had any intention to get involved in Singaporean politics like Ngerng - I think he is foolhardy, he thinks people would listen to him, he thought he could change Singapore. No, that's ridiculous. Me, I just left Singapore because I wanted a better life, a brighter future and I was miserable for most of my childhood anyway, I was a brilliant student but I didn't get along with my parents and I just wasn't happy in Singapore. I was desperate to get out and see the big, beautiful world outside Singapore, I felt like a fish swimming in a very small fish tank and was desperate to get out. So the moment I was old enough, I left.
oh so you know him so which means you know what is going on. But do you believe his blog?
DeleteAnd wow you have a bad childhood I feel sorry for you. Did your parent beat or scold you for not getting A result or something else?
Delete@Neon. I don't read Roy Ngerng's blog. I have better things to do with my time. I don't think he's a great writer in any case. Please be careful when you say, "so you know him" - yeah I know who he is the same way I know who Donald Trump is and I know who Taylor Swift is, but do I personally know them well? Nope, I don't. Roy Ngerng has made the headlines a few times in Singapore - that's all I know and I've reflected on what I have read about him back then. I have no desire to read his blog.
DeleteAs for my childhood - during my primary school days, I always had straight As and nearly always scored 100% for everything, like I was the perfect student yet my parents believed that they had to beat their children or else they would not be scared of their parents. I was always beaten up for being rude, for being naughty, for not listening to my parents. The more I look back upon it, the more bitter I am about the way I was brought up because I thought I had done everything right being such an outstanding student and they never thought, my son is going to look back upon this one day and hate us for this.
Anyway, a bigger change happened when I was in secondary school - I realized that my parents are both total idiots. They are primary school teachers you know and anything more complex than the PSLE syllabus confused them. I stopped listening to them when I was about secondary one and started running away from home, I was uncontrollable, they hated me and I hated them. I would scream at them and tell them just how stupid they are because I knew they were always afraid of 'losing face' - needless to say, by the time I was like 13 years old, I stopped talking to them. I found my own escapism in watching movies, reading magazines and novels and I promised myself, when I am old enough, I am going to move away to the UK or USA and get away from my parents.
You have no idea just how stupid my mother is okay? Like her IQ is so low that she says shit like this: when she came to visit me in London in December, I told her not to pack too much because she can use my washing machine to wash her clothes. She said, "cannot wash clothes, because winter too cold, clothes cannot dry." And I just rolled my eyes and said, "you think I go from November to April without doing any laundry?" That's the problem with my mother - not only is she incredibly stupid, she also believes that if she asks a question like, "how do you wash your clothes in the winter?" she will lose face, so instead she says whatever bullshit she believes (which is always totally wrong) and makes a total fool of herself. I think she knows that she is a total idiot anyway, yet she doesn't make things any easier for herself by simply asking questions. That's how hard it is to deal with her - anyway, I don't talk to them if I have to. I haven't spoken to my family at all this Chinese New Year as I have no desire to.
The funny thing is, my sisters are not stupid at all, they're both incredibly intelligent and capable like me. So I don't know how two stupid parents can have three intelligent children. Go figure.
wow you remind me of my cousin. literally, during Chinese new year evening my family and I went to her house( not HDB). the interesting part
Deleteis she is from a girl school. It will be awkward for her if she is talking to a boy. anyway, Back to the main point. So My cousin and I were
talking some random things. and when i saw her being playful or being rude her father would slap her or scold her (but not so loud). And her mother is fierce like a tiger ( and I am not gonna explain the whole thing but you get the point). Another interesting thing is she talk like a America accent. Well she told me that her father would not let her speak singlish 0.0 So yeah I can explain more but i think this is enough for now. by the way her family is rich. And i think she is from a top school. At least her family is not so stupid i guess.
Anyway, since I was like 13, my parents gave up on me because I was so rebellious, I was so argumentative, they just washed their hands clean of me. They were like, fine we will stop caring. Do what you want. They didn't care whom my friends were, they didn't care if I studied, they didn't care if I stayed out late etc. I think they were not concerned because they knew I was going to continue getting straight As anyway and if they tried to intervene, I would tell them to go away because I was more intelligent than them. I guess my parents never realized that they had to earn my respect then - they just assumed that in a Chinese family, I simply had to respect my parents no matter what, unconditionally. And I just finally turned around and said, "when I am old enough, I am going to migrate to the West so I don't have to see you two on a regular basis." That's why I got the grades I needed for a scholarship at a top university, then I went into banking because it was lucrative - I wanted to prove to myself that I could be a success in the West.
DeleteBut no my parents never 'got it' - they never understood why their son hates them so much, they never understood that they were bad parents, heck, they never understood why I wanted to start life all over again in another country just to get away from them. In short, they're too stupid to understand anything and since we don't talk anymore, I am not there to explain anything to them. Let them think what they want, I don't care either way.
Maybe your cousin will say, "fuck it, I'm moving to America when I am old enough, bye."
maybe she will go to Western area (I guess). now she is a secondary one student in girls school. And yep she is getting rebellious( little by little). And as for me I got a bad childhood too. when I was primary one if I get a question wrong she would beat me or scold me (really loud) And use a Cane it was painful as fuck. ( and you get the idea misbehave and all that) I guess you, my cousin, Me And some other Asian parents(including the west) are the unlucky ones to have this kind of childhood
DeleteSo sad :(
Who knows what she will end up doing - my sisters had equally miserable childhoods but they pretend that they were happy and now continue to live in Singapore and well, that's their choice. I don't question why they do what they did. I also know of adults in Singapore who don't talk to their parents anymore because they simply cannot reconcile what happened to them. And for me, it's more a question of pride as well - I think I've become a very interesting person as an adult: I am highly educated, I have worked in many countries, I have a wealth of interesting experiences around the world, I speak many languages, have worked with so many interesting people yet my parents really can't be bothered to get to know me as an adult. They don't even know what I do for a living - that's how little interest they show in me and I'm like, well I can't force you to be interested in me and all I can do is to ignore you as well if that's the way you wish to be. I've actually argued and exchanged a lot more with you than my parents in 2017 - that's how little we communicate.
DeleteParents need to realize that if they mess up, their children will decide to just ignore them and cut them out of their lives when they grow up. I do wonder why my parents bothered having children if they are not at all interested in being parents in the first place. Go figure.
yeah that's suck. And it was nice talking to you :) Wish you a happy Chinese new year.
DeleteI don't do Chinese new year. I don't do Chinese things.
DeleteI think as a child, it was very hard for me to hate my parents for what they did, so instead I blamed their culture and hated all things Chinese. I blamed their culture and rejected it, I embraced all things Western - like, what was the alternative? How could a child hate his own parents growing up, living in the same house? No, so instead, I transferred that hatred to all things Chinese and swore to become as white as possible just to spite my parents. Today, I live in the West, I speak French as a second language and I don't have Chinese friends. Not that my parents care anyway, we don't talk.
yeah I also don't really like Chinese culture too but for me I guess I have to live with it. and good for you if you like west culture. Perhaps you could tell me more about it.
DeleteWhat is there to tell? You should do whatever makes you happy. I have long given up trying to please my parents and just did whatever made me happy.
Deletewait a minute would you mind explain to me why would you hate Chinese culture and also blamed for it?
DeleteSimple: whenever my parents did something awful, as a child, instead of blaming them, I would tell myself that it is not their fault but they are a victim of their culture, so I always blamed the culture instead. For a long time, I taught myself that my mother especially was a victim of a very sexist culture that had made her lose confidence in herself, believe that she had no mind of her own and had to obey her husband etc. I've only started blaming them since I was an adult because I no longer live at home with them, I no longer have to face them on a daily basis. I think it would have been too hard for me to accept them for their flaws and hold them responsible for their faults if we lived in the same house, so I chose to blame Chinese culture instead all those years and as a result, I really hated all things Chinese. I suppose I used it as a scapegoat.
DeleteHow does a Chinese culture have to do with bad parenting?( sorry I know a little about Chinese culture)
DeleteSigh. How can I explain this to you in a simple manner. Please imagine, me as a scared 9 year old kid, I have perfect 100% for every subject in school - yet I still get brutally beaten up by my parents everyday for no reason because they are crazy. I am convinced that my parents hate me and that I am a terrible person who deserves to die. I contemplated suicide so many times as a young boy.
DeleteIf I faced the fact that my parents truly hated me and regretted having me, then I think I may have killed myself. I simply could not understand why they treated me so badly. I needed something else to blame, I needed a scapegoat - because if I blamed my parents, then what could I do? I don't get to choose my parents. I had very bad parents who beat me up as a child everyday for no reason (and I stress, I was always the kid who came in first in class for every single subject - so it couldn't have been my studies). I needed something else to blame, so I blamed Chinese culture.
I could have chosen anything to blame, but as a child, I chose Chinese culture to blame. Whether it has anything to do with bad parenting, that's another argument altogether. But I had to do whatever I needed to go to stop myself from committing suicide as a young child. Don't you get it? I had the parents from hell. I had to tell myself whatever I needed to in order to grow up, become an adult so I can get the hell away from my parents and live far, far away in another country.
You realize you're asking me to justify a choice I made as a kid at the age of about 8 years old. We're not talking about choices I have made as a well-educated, rational, intelligent adult. You're talking about something I decided as a very scared, badly abused, suicidal 8 year old kid, and when you're dealing with highly traumatized, abused children, there is often no rational explanation.
DeleteWell I feel sorry for you. really, maybe you can do a blog about Chinese culture. (this is my last question for this blog)
DeleteNo. I hate Chinese culture so much. Why would I want to write about something that I have hated all my life? I have nothing good to say about it - but that's simply my opinion and I have no intention of offending people who may feel differently about Chinese culture. I hate it and that's my choice.
DeleteC'mon LIFT... "Neon" is obviously a troll getting a rise out of you responding to him.
DeleteNeon Galaxy is a teenage kid suffering a crisis
DeleteTrying to play the fool to distract himself from his own crippling depression (& what not)
Hes gotta swallow his pride and see his school or family service centre counselor. longer he hangs around online, wasting time reading shit he doesn't understand, in between the regular trips to youporn or whatever porn site he fancies
his mental impairments will get worse
Lets ignore him; if theres no payoff he will go elsewhere.. hopefully where he can get help
He must have some fucking stupid parents who are utterly unfit.
I think I sense a cry for help somewhere amongst his inane, ridiculous question. But I'm in no position to help him. I can't fix his problems.
DeleteNeon, I don't think Chinese culture itself is to be blamed for bad parenting. My son would say that I am a crazy Asian mother because I have high expectations of him, but he is turning out to be a pretty decent young man (so far!). I see other non-Asian parents, and they have raised decent kids and not so decent kids. I see other Asian parents, and some of them have raised nasty kids. We can't all blame the culture, but it is certainly a factor in how your child turns out. If you insist on filial piety and blind devotion without your giving affection and unconditional love to your child, you are in for a rough ride. To me that is the root of the problem --- "Gimme, gimme because I am your mother!" Well, being a parent means giving without conditions. That's why some people choose not to have kids. It's a gamble.
