LIFT Vlog episode 2: What do the British think of Singapore?
Here we go guys, episode 2 is ready. I have improved some of the technical aspects, but this is a steep learning curve for me. Please let me know what you think and how I may improve it, many thanks. I hope you like it :)
Hey Limpeh, Great effort for producing those two videos; your video editing is decent. But I must say that I was distracted by your highly animated gestures.
Hi and thanks for your feedback. I am trying to find the right balance between being playful and using the funny sound effects and not overdoing it. I did watch episode 1 and thought, damn I sound so corporate, like I am introducing some insurance product ... so I wanted to be a bit more animated this time round, I will find the right balance after a few videos.
I find it very unnatural for you to be looking at the right-side of the camera all the time, as if you are not talking to the audience but talking to some invisible friend there. Is your script placed there? If so, you might want to place your script somewhere near the lens so that you can maintain eye contact with your audience. Or even better, memorize your script.
For countries like Croatia, (ex-)Yugoslavia, I know they are in the Balkans, not because I'm a Geography student or I memorize the atlas, it's because these countries happen to be pretty good in football and I looked up a bit on these country. Yup, I acquired knowledge because of a different reason. LOL.
Yup, let me tell you what happened man ... I started off, thinking that I could merely remember the bullet points and then just talk about it in a more natural style, rather than sound as if I am reading off a script, I then got to a big chunk and somehow just got lost and gave up and thought, that's it, I need to script there, so my eyes were darting to the right to look at my laptop and what I could/should have done was to move the camera as well, but i didn't. Another lesson i have learnt!
Was the Hungary - paat toh iao joke just a bit too cheesy? :)
The joke is OK lah but normally you don't use the neighbouring countries when you are trying to make reference. In this case, Croatia. If the uncle don't know Croatia, chances are, they will not know about Hungary. So when talking about Croatia, I will use other reference rather than the neighbouring countries. Maybe I'll say things like, "Neh, yi gei Croatia lah. Tak kiu sibei gi lart gei. Wu tak World Cup ga Euro bui gei". I agree they might not know what on Earth (literally) Croatia is but at least they get a rough idea of which country you went.
(As for Hungary = paat toh yao joke, I once had the same confusion. Why TF does a country call themselves "hungry"? They are constantly starving har? But some reading up clears everything.)
I get your point - I like the way football is a good way to help people learn about different countries, whatever works!
I met someone yesterday whilst diving and he just struck up a conversation with me and I guessed correctly that he was from Latvia. So he asked me, how did you learn about Latvia? I could've said the boring answer, "at school" - but instead, I joked and I said, "I watch the Eurovision Song Contest every year."
Forgot that I used Singapore-style Hokkien and didn't provide the "translation".
"Neh, yi gei Croatia lah. Tak kiu sibei gi lart gei. Wu tak World Cup ga Euro bui gei" (THAT Croatia, which is good in football. They frequently get into World Cup and Euro Cup finals.)
Its abit too long. 5 mins is the sweet spot so if it gets longer better to break it down into 2 episodes then you got more views and less new content to think of.

ReplyDeleteTrust me, I know it is too long and that is even after I dropped like 3 minutes of footage as it was too long already.
DeleteThe longer the piece, the longer I take to edit it. So I promised myself the next piece will be around the 5 minute mark.
