Update on my left ankle

Thanks for all the well wishes for my dodgy left ankle. Yes there's a small fracture but it's healing pretty quickly. I was able to go out today, wearing normal shoes & socks, go see a client with my boss and visit an art gallery on the way home. I have taken a picture this afternoon to show you the extent of the bruising from the torn ligaments (see picture below). It's not hurting as much as I thought it would, but what is disturbing is that my other ankle now feels sore - probably because I keep putting all my weight on the other foot instead and it's actually my right ankle now that hurts more than my left ankle, go figure. I'm actually going diving tonight - I figure it's more forgiving than gymnastics, no hard landings as I am going into the water head first and I just have to be careful on the pool side.
Why is the bruising there and not on the ankle itself?!

PS. Goodness me, like how popular is that interview with Yun? I'm surprised because it's really just two people talking about what happened (ie. the SMRT PRC driver strikes) and reflecting on the issues involved, but there you go. 18,196 pageviews yesterday, woah! That's my second most busy day on my blog ever! Thank you for your support my dear readers.

  1. Hope you are getting better.

That is not bruising. You probably ruptured some blood vessels and the blood from the internal bleeding is just settling at the base of your ankle, thanks to gravity.

I wouldn't go diving if I were you. It would be too easy to slip on the other foot.

    1. Hi Fox. Thanks for the information! What do I need to do about this collection of blood from the internal bleeding then? Anything you recommend please?

And erm, I read your message after I got out of the pool, I got through diving in one piece. I showed my coach after the session and he was horrified ... like, "if you are injured you MUST tell me!!!" LOL.

    2. Nothing. Let Mother Nature do its work. The blood will be reabsorbed into your body after a few weeks. I sprained my ankle quite badly many years after a football tackle and the same thing happened to me.

      See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haematoma for more info.

    3. Actually, it is indeed bruising - the source of which is nothing to do with rupturing blood vessels, but in this case is most likely due to a partial tear in one or more ligaments - I would guess looking at the picture, an ATFL (anterior talofibular ligament) injury. A sprain is simple talk for a partial tear in a ligament. But as already mentioned the treatment is time. A haematoma is a different beast, that is a discrete collection of blood under the skin, taking longer to heal.

    4. Thanks for the info. More of the same bruising has appeared at the base of the toes ... It doesn't hurt though, so I am not that concerned about it.

  2. I sprained my ankle pretty badly during BMT (I think somewhat like how badly your ankle is) and Mother Nature didn't do her job with the Haematoma. A doctor have to let the blood out (ewwww, sounds medieval, right?) to accelerate the healing.

    1. Blood letting?! Yes sounds very medieval indeed, but they did that to my knee in Singapore. The doctor stabbed the swelling on my knee with a HUGE syringe (he said, "look the other way and bite down on this towel") and drew out a mixture of synovial fluid and blood from the swelling on my knee. Yikes. So yeah, I presume they did the same thing for your ankle, ie. a big needle?

    2. I can't remember how big the needle was, or how painful the "operation" was, maybe that's because my ankle was so numb that I couldn't feel the pain.

  3. Look on the bright side... you can blog more

  4. Keep your foot raised, especially when lying down, to let gravity help with draining the excess fluid. That's general nursing advice for any excess fluids in the foot.
