I have been asked to do a very short & concise post to summarize why the PAP's figures don't add up and why their justification to turn away all refugees built on a pack of lies. So, if you Singaporeans want to claim to be good at maths, then please have a look at these figures and comment.
I want to talk about Operation Thunderstorm, a shameful period in Singapore's history which started in 1975. The official rational and justification behind Operation Thunderstorm was this: "Being a small nation with limited space, Singapore was the first country to stop the boat people from entering its coastlines, instead providing the refugees with food, water and fuel and turning them away. The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) cooperated with the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) in the Operation Thunderstorm to carry out this task."
I would like to quote someone who was in the Singaporean Navy at that time, as he left the following comment: "I was in the Singapore navy at that time and those refugees that were intercepted before they reached our coast were provided with food and water and towed out and left to the mercy of the sea. Looking back i think it was a shameful thing to do, the boats were definitely not seaworthy and most of them perished at sea, the lucky ones made it to Australia. How many died after we pushed them back into the ocean, nobody will ever know. it was like a death sentence with a very slim chance of clemency. Could we have been more humane and given these people shelter until a third country decides to take them? How would you have felt if you were one of them being treated as if your life is almost worthless?"

| Can you look them in the eye and send them to their death? |
And by the way, some of the boats which were in better condition were seized by the navy and painted in the navy colours and became part of the fleet. what a joke. Anyway this sad part of our history, of how we were so cruel to our fellow human beings will never be taught in schools or mentioned in public."
Yes I can go on about us all having blood on our hands, but I want to talk about statistics today. Facts & figures. The population of Singapore in 1975 was 2.25 million, in 1980 it was 2.4 million and in 1985 it was 2.75 million. If Singapore was "a small nation with limited space back then, then how the hell was it possible to grow the population today to 5.2 million people today? The PAP claimed Singapore was too full and had no space for a few thousand refugees when we had less than 3 million people - but let's look at the statistics today.
There are 5.2 million people in Singapore today but only 2.9 million of them were actually born in Singapore. That means there are 2.2 million residents in Singapore (including PRs, foreign workers on work permits and newly naturalized citizens who were born abroad) who were born outside Singapore. Those are the numbers. So in summary:
![]() |
| What should the population be in Singapore? |
Singapore population in 1975: 2.26 million
Singapore population in 1980: 2.41 million
("We are a small island, no space for more refugees, we are full.")
Singapore population in 2012: 5.2 million
Singapore population in 2012 who were born in Singapore: 2.9 million
(ie. what the population should've been without this influx of PRCs, Pinoys etc)
Singapore population in 2012 who were born outside Singapore: 2.2 million (来来来,欢迎欢迎!)
Wait. So you managed to find the space for 2.2 million foreign-born people in Singapore - that's almost the same as the population of Singapore in 1975 - yet you have no space for a few thousand Vietnamese refugees? Was Singapore full in 1975 or was it more than half empty, given that the population then was only 43% of today's figures. So clearly, the PAP were lying then when they claimed that Singapore was a small country that had no space for refugees to justify the cold blooded murder of killing Vietnamese boat people by towing their boats back out into international waters, sending them to certain death. This is cold blooded murder justified with lies and made up statistics - are you stupid/gullible enough to fall for these lies? This isn't rocket science as Singapore is either too full or it is not.

| Where is your humanity? How can you treat other human beings like that? |
A few thousand refugees vs 2.2 million. So clearly, Singapore wasn't full in 1975 at the time of Operation Thunderstorm (more like Operation cold blooded murder) - quite the opposite. Am I the only one to spot the blatant lie here? If Singapore was such a small island that it was full at 2.25 million - how the hell did you let in so many new migrants in the meantime, including over a million PRCs in the last 10 years?
The government (and many Singaporeans alike) are still using the same excuse today to turn away the 40 Rohingya refugees - "Singapore is already full, too many people already, 5.2 million people on this small island". Excuse me guys, didn't you get the memo from Mah Bow Tan, the PAP minister for National Development? Tut tut, call yourselves Singaporeans when you don't even know what the PAP's plans are. The PAP wants to grow the population of Singapore to 6.5 million people. So there you go, it's official! That is why you have so many PRCs and Filipinos in Singapore today, we still need plenty more migrants to reach that figure of 6.5 million. Given that the shortfall is 1.3 million, the doors are still wide open for economic migrants. (PRCs, 来来来,欢迎欢迎!)
So, it is official, the PAP says there is space for another 1.3 million people in Singapore - but wait, you said there's no space for 40 Rohingya refugees?
5.2 million = too many, not enough space for another 40 refugees.
5.2 million = too few, we need 1.3 million more to reach that 6.5 million figure
What is going on? Is Singapore already so full we cannot accept 40 refugees, or is Singapore so empty that we need another 1.3 million? According to the PAP, both are true - how can this be? How can the PAP contradict itself like that? Which of the statements above is true? It can only be one or the other, not both.
Surely any intelligent person capable of reasoning will see that either one of the statements can be true but both statements cannot be true as they contradict each other. Either Singapore is full or it is not. Yet so many Singaporeans are willing to believe that Singapore is full when it comes to refugees but are happy to support the PAP's stance on importing more foreigners to grow the population. What gives? Is that how the PAP can get away with so many lies and contradict themselves over and over again because Singaporeans are just too stupid to look at the facts, analyse the numbers and make some value judgement based on the statistics, rather than simply believe the lies they are fed by the PAP? Can look at the statistics and figure out what is going on, rather than just believe the bullshit lies you're fed by the PAP? Do you know what to believe or do you need to be told what to believe?

Hi Limpeh. I am sure this post is related to the "name the idiots", where Singaporeans are so afraid now that they cannot distinguish between refugee and foreign workers. Furthermore, these people are educated. If you are educated, why be so insecure? Even I don't get it. Why is that we lack self confidence?
ReplyDeleteHi Hecate, yes you'e right. It is a question of self confidence. That doesn't depend on what your job is, how much money you have or how many degrees you have.
DeleteI was just talking at length with an old friend I've not seen since 1992 today - crazy long time but so glad to catch up with him. He went travelling around the world as he got sick of Singapore - went to 60 countries (and I thought I'd seen much of the world!) over many years until he literally had $20 to his name. Then he decided, okay time to work and now he has built up a multi-million dollar business empire.
He didn't panic when he had $20 to his name. He believed in himself. He had the confidence to say, "so what if I only have 20 bucks. I have skills, I am smart, I know people, I can always earn more money, I am glad I took the time to travel and see those amazing places".
We need more people like him. He is truly amazing. I am so glad he tracked me down after all these years.
sounds like a very interesting guy, please tell us more about him...can be an inspiration to many others...
DeleteThis was the period when Singapore supported the Khmer Rouge diplomatically and materially in various ways, including supplying or facilitating the supply of arms.
ReplyDeleteThis is quite surprising and stupid, can you please provide some links for further research?
Deletethanks
I've met 2 boat people from Vietnam. They were Chinese-Vietnamese who were forced to leave due to war with China in 1970's. Both were intercepted by S'pore navy/Police and placed in a camp in S'pore for several months before one went to Australia, the other went to France. Both went to university in the respective countries and are now very successful (one is a banker the other started dot.com). If S'pore had taken them in, they would have gone to NUS and become loyal citizens (I prefer them over the thousands of PRC that we grant PR status to annually). Our population numbers won't have declined as rapidly if we had accepted some of these migrants.
ReplyDeleteVery good point!
