What do you think guys? I acquired a pocket watch recently and started wearing it on a chain with my waistcoat. A good look? I mean, would people automatically see the chain and think, "pocket watch on a chain" or would people just get confused and go, "huh? What's with that chain dangling out of his pocket?" I have showed it to some people at a meeting today and the guys were like, "Why don't you wear a wrist watch?" and the women were like, "Oh that's so unique! That's cute! I want something like that too!"

 |
| Would people be able to work out what that chain is for? |

 |
| For WD: here's how to attach it to the waistcoat. |
 |
| Tie a knot at the end of the chain, so it cannot slip back through the button hole. |
 |
| So that's how it looks with the pocket watch placed in the pocket. |
 |
| So that's how it looks: attached to the pocket hole. |
 |
| So even if it falls out, you won't lose it. |
 |
| With this waistcoat, there is a stitch in the waistcoat pocket that allows me to pass the chain through |
 |
| Tie a knot as usual, in the chain. |
 |
| There you go, it's attached pocket to pocket, a different look. |
Well, to be honest, on the first look on just the chain with hidden watch, it reminds me of those chains primary school boys wear to secure their wallets to their shorts.
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty cool though, very vintage.
Thanks! Erm, yeah that did cross my mind ... not sure if that was fashionable here in the UK...
Deletenow you need to buy a monocle and a bowler hat... and grow a mustache!!!
ReplyDeleteMonocle ...? I think bowler hats are quite cool actually.
DeleteBut nooooooooooo to taches. Eugh. I always associate those with the bad guys in the movies for some reasons. LOL. Thanks Peanut :)
So bourgeois. Just kidding.
ReplyDeleteAt least you get it though, that's my point. You see the chain and you think, so bourgeois. (Because you are v atas :) but I worry that too many people will see the chain and think, what's that dangling thing and not even realize there's a watch tucked away in the pocket at the end of it, LOL.
DeleteDon't worry. I do think most people will get it. I tried a pocket watch for a while and then went back to the wrist watch. Found it too much of a bother. But it looks good on you.
DeleteI think it's more something to to add a sparkle to an ensemble rather than something I will wear everyday lah ;)
DeleteHi LIFT,
ReplyDelete> women were like, "Oh that's so unique! That's cute! I want something like that too!"
That would include me too. Pocket watch on a chain is a fashion classic. Now you make me think about buying vests/waistcoats again. Btw, could you show how you attach the end of the chain to one of the pockets, please? I have always wondered about that.
Cheers, WD.
You don't need to wear it with a waistcoat, I know of some who attach it to the belt loop and so the chain is dangling from the belt loop to the trouser pocket.
DeleteThere are custom made pocket watch chains - but they are so ridiculously expensive because they are rare and of novelty value. What you see there is in fact a cheap woman's necklace I got from a costume jewellery store. The chain looks decent and I chucked the pendant away. As to how I attach it to the pockets, let me take some photos to illustrate and I will update the article with more photos.
OK WD, updated the article with more photos - I didn't give very detailed instructions but I thought the photos were self-explanatory, yeah? Let me know what you think, thanks.
DeleteCool! Thanks for the self-explanatory photos. They're awesome. Cheers!
DeleteBtw, pocket watch reminds me of the White Rabbit in Alice In Wonderland. :)
DeleteI personally prefer the button hole to pocket look as compared to the pocket to pocket look. The asymmetrical look created by the different heights of the end of the chains give a flow that seems more polished (to me). Love pocket watches in general. Keep having fun with your wardrobe.
ReplyDeleteI think tbh pocket watches look good in a watch case - as collectables. Unless you are a girl and wear it ala Marie antoinette pinned onto a court dress/evening dress. Then you'll need a tiara to go with it. LOL.
ReplyDeleteWhat make is the watch?
